Genetically modified animals are often used for medical and genetic research. However, in some animals, genetic modification has been applied in order to produce the desired proteins in high amounts of milk and to obtain more efficient animals. Although transgenic animals are often used to understand mechanisms in scientific research, it has recently become common to produce high amounts of certain proteins, especially in dairy producing animals. A protein necessary for the human body and which cannot be produced in any disease can be produced in high amounts by this method.

Goats, sheep and cows are widely used for these applications. Genetic modification in animals is carried out for health, productivity, or industrial purposes. In the field of health, genetically modified animals are mostly used in scientific studies as a model for diseases. Some diseases in humans are mimicked by the transfer of appropriate genes to animals and studies are being carried out on animals. OncoMouse is one of the best examples of this kind of work; OncoMouse was developed at Harvard University and carries a gene that causes many human cancers. Thus, many studies that cannot be tested on humans can be tested on these mice. Another important application in the field of health is the xenotransplantation.

Under normal circumstances, organs from other animals cannot adapt to humans, but are perceived as foreign by the body and are rendered ineffective by the human defense mechanism. It is thought that in some genetically modified organisms, the proteins that enable the organ to be perceived as foreign are altered and do not affect the defense mechanism. In addition, some nutritional supplements can be produced in genetically modified animals. In 1997, the first transgenic cow, Rosie, produced more human protein and therefore produced milk closer to breast milk. Efficiency-increasing applications are rapidly increasing, although new.
